Simultaneity and the Constancy of the Speed of Light: Normalization of Space-time Vectors in the Lorentz Transformation

چکیده

One of the main consequences of Einstein’s derivation of the Lorentz transformation (LT) was the conclusion that a given event may not occur simultaneously for two observers in relative motion. It is pointed out that the constancy of the speed of light in free space is not sufficient in itself to completely specify the relationship between space-time vectors in different rest frames, as first noted by Lorentz in 1899. The LT results by assuming that distances measured perpendicular to the line of two observers must be equal ( d d ' y y = and d d ' z z = ), and it is this assumption that produces the non-simultaneity characteristic of the resulting equations. If one forgoes the latter assumption, it is possible to impose simultaneity ( d d ' t t = ) as an alternative normalization condition for the space-time vectors. The

The Global Positioning System and the Lorentz Transformation

The Global Positioning System has been hailed as one of the great triumphs of relativity theory. It is based on the principle that the rates of atomic clocks are affected in a well-defined manner by changes in their relative velocity to the Earth and their position in a gravitational field. It also is consistent with the modern definition of the meter as the distance light travels in free space...

Lorentz Transformations from Intrinsic Symmetries

We reveal the frame-exchange space-inversion (FESI) symmetry and the frame-exchange time-inversion (FETI) symmetry in the Lorentz transformation and propose a symmetry principle stating that the space-time transformation between two inertial frames is invariant under the FESI or the FETI transformation. In combination with the principle of relativity and the presumed nature of Euclidean space a...

00 8 Invariant space - time intervals , clock synchronisation and correct application of Lorentz transformations in special relativity

Space-like and time-like invariant space-time intervals are used to analyse measurements of spatial and temporal distances. The former are found to be Lorentz invariant –there is no 'relativistic length contraction', whereas the latter exhibit the experimentally confirmed 'time dilatation' effect, without, however, 'relativity of simultaneity'. It is shown how the spurious predictions of length...

Special Relativity With Apparent Simultaneity

An interpretation of special relativity is presented with alternative principles that treat an appearance of simultaneity as physically real. This implies instantaneous propagation of incoming light, but maintains light’s invariable propagation rate of c by using an alternative measure of speed. The relativistic Doppler effect is derived from physical principles based on the direct appearance o...
